Walker Gets Gold in Mono Skier X

Aspen, Colo. – Right from the beginning, it was clear the Mono Skier X title was going to be Tyler Walker’s.

The New Hampshire native took the lead out of the gates and as his other competitors struggled, Walker pulled away to claim the gold.

Not bad for a guy who just arrived in Aspen this morning after claiming first place in both downhill races at the International Paralympic Committee World Cup in Sestriere, Italy.

“I got the silver last year, so this just feels awesome,” a jet-leged but victorious Walker said. “I was in Italy yesterday, and now I am on the snow here in X Games.  It was a great course this year; I have to give it up to X Games in Aspen.”

Aspen native Sam Ferguson, who fell at the start of the race, took silver in front of the hometown fans with last year’s gold medalist Kees-Jan van der Klooster grabbing the bronze.

“After I wrecked at the beginning, I just kept thinking I have to stay in this thing,” Ferguson said.  “And it paid off.  It feels awesome to win this in front of my home crowd.  I can’t thank Aspen enough for the commitment to this sport.”

Mono Skier X is a fast and furious course race that features disabled mono skiers racing over tabletop jumps, banked turns, rollers and gaps.  Like the other X course disciplines at Winter X, Mono Skier X is a fusion of motorcross and downhill racing on snow.
