SURFING SPORT DESCRIPTION |
| Sport Organizer: National Surfing League
Sport Description: The Game - Two Surfing teams comprised of East and West Coast surfers will compete in four quarters with each quarter broken off into two fifteen to twenty minute heats depending on wave conditions. Each team will also include two international wild cards, which will allow the teams to add other surfers from other parts of the world. Scoring: Each of the two teams (East Coast and West Coast) has eight surfers. Each heat is surfed as a team. Four surfers from one team go out for the first fifteen to twenty-minute heat, and then four surfers from the other team go out for the quarter’s second fifteen to twenty-minute heat. Surfers keep their top two wave scores. Each of the athletes’ best two scores are added together along with their teammates’ best two scores for a team score. Each team is allotted three time outs per half, usually taken during lulls in wave sets or while team riders are paddling out to the break. Team coaches determine which foursome’s will head out – based on match-ups, surf conditions, rider’s strengths, etc. Each wave is judged for technique, wave selection, tricks and creativity. Equipment: Boards - The Game allows for each athlete to pick the board that suits the wave conditions best. Therefore, there is no restriction on size, shape or fin number. -30- Contact: Maria Elles Scott, 310-642-1509, maria.elles.scott@espn.com Melissa Gullotti, 860-766-7216, melissa.c.gullotti@espn.com |
